Athens - Greece,
The XXXVIIIth Olympiad will take place between 13 August - 29 August, 2004
Athens, Greece, was awarded
the 2004 Olympic Games on 5 September, 1997 in Lausanne, Switzerland. It
will be the third time Athens has hosted the Olympic Games. Greece is one
of only five countries to have been in attendance at every Olympic Games
since they began, in Athens, in 1986. The other countries being Great Britain,
France, Switzerland and Australia. Athens hosted the first of our Modern
day Olympic Games and 108 years later the Games will return to their birth
place.
In the summer of 2004
all eyes will be on Athens Greece as the city hosts what might possibly
become the most important Olympics ever. The Olympics in Athens may not
be as spectacular as those held in Sydney, Australia. But they may be better!
The ancient Olympics were
rather different from the modern Games. There were fewer events, and only
free men who spoke Greek could compete, instead of athletes from any country.
Also, the games were always held at Olympia instead of moving around to
different sites every time. Like our Olympics, though, winning athletes
were heroes who put their home towns on the map. One young Athenian nobleman
defended his political reputation by mentioning how he entered seven chariots
in the Olympic chariot-race. This high number of entries made both the
aristocrat and Athens look very wealthy and powerful.
The 1896 Summer Olympics,
officially known as the Games of the I Olympiad, were held in 1896 in Athens,
Greece. These games were the first modern Olympic Games and the first Games
since Roman emperor Theodosius I banned the Ancient Olympic Games in 393.
They were held between Monday, April 6 and Wednesday, April 15, 1896.
An 1894 congress organized
by Pierre de Coubertin in Paris established the International Olympic Committee
and appointed the Greek capital of Athens as the host city. The Greeks
had little experience with organizing sports events, and initially had
financial troubles as well, but managed to have everything ready in time.
There's more than one "red
beach" in Greece, a name given to any place where the sand is a bit pink
or rusty-colored, and several of them are often naturist-friendly. Some
sources may confuse the different "Kokkinos Ornos", so be sure which island
is meant when you decide to go.
This beach in southern
Crete can be reached by water or by hiking about 25 minutes from Matala.
The access is up over a fairly steep hillside which requires scrambling
over one small area of rocks. At the top there is a goat fence with a gate;
go through this and begin the descent to Red Beach. In high summer there
are sunbed and umbrella rentals, but most of the time you'll be relying
on your own towel or sarong to keep something between you and the sand.
Athens is situated in the
prefecture of Attica and extends to the peninsula that reaches up to Central
Greece. It is surrounded by mountains Ymmytos, Pendeli and Parnitha, northwards
and eastwards, and the Saronic gulf southwards and westwards. The sun is
shining over Athens all year round. The climate is one of the best in Europe,
with mild winters and very hot summers, ideal for tourism. It is located
just a few kilometers from the port of Piraeus, the central commercial
port of the capital, and the shores of southern Attica.
